Until 1886 the bicycle world had it's ups and downs. Up in popularity, the high-wheel bicycle was happening, but inherently unsteady, many people kept falling down. Because a large wheel must be straddled in order to ride, short people, children and women in dresses couldn't ride at all. | ||

Another member of the Starley family named John, realized this and created the safety bicycle in 1886. The safety bicycle resembles the modern bicycle. It had a crank driven chain drive to the rear wheel and both wheels were the same size. It was much more safe, hence the name, and it permitted short people and women to ride. |
