The Origins of Competitive Cycling

The bicycle is also used for sport. Competitive cycling originated in Paris. The first competition was in 1868 at Parc de St. Cloud. 1). Competitive Cycling reached its height of popularity in the 1960's but continues to be a popular sport. The Tour De France is considered the most prestigious event. It was started in 1903 by Henri Desgrage. It has many days of riding throughout France and its bordering countries, with lengths of up to 260 miles per day. The winner is recognized as the world's best cyclist. The Olympic games have nine cycling events, including of off-road racing, track racing, and road racing. In 1996, professional cyclists were allowed to compete. Many other cycling competitions exist. Other types of competitive cycling include off-road racing, downhill racing, time trials, BMX (Bicycle Moto Cross), observed trials, cyclocross, and artistic cycling. These types of cycling are gaining in popularity.
