Ireland and England

Magical, mystical, and lush - with a hint of Shakespeare
MODERATE BIKING      30 DAYS
Trip #IRE

In Ireland, we bike through some of the world’s prettiest scenery (are there really 40 shades of green in Ireland?), along quiet lanes, past white cottages with colorful doors. Signs are in Gaelic and English, so you’ll see this musical language, then hear it in the shops while you choose that night's supper or a great souvenir.

Cycle through busy fishing villages, picnic on a seaside cliff, stay on an island, explore ancient ruins, enjoy magical Irish harp music, kiss the Blarney Stone and then discover exciting Dublin. The ferry to England is a chance to relax and write those postcards that your families are expecting! Busses and trains let you rest your cycling muscles and still see a lot. There is no cycling in England. The group will use public transportation to get from place to place.

We explore Stratford on foot, ending the day at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Then it's on to Oxford to visit that great medieval university town. Windsor Castle is the favorite home of England's royal family, so watch for famous faces while you tour there. This trip finishes in exciting London, to see the Tower, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Piccadilly Circus, ride a double–decker bus, watch the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace and try to fit in all the wonders of this cosmopolitan city. Just be sure to look right when crossing the street and “Mind the Gap!”

“I went for one reason: sightseeing. When it was time to come home there were eleven reasons to stay: my friends. Words can not describe the trip I had when I signed up with SHP. The experience was beyond comprehension, beyond imagination, and even beyond recollection. I can remember highlights, of course, some things are just too incredible to forget. But it’s really the little things that count. These are the things that are so easily forgettable, yet make a trip not just great but unfathomable. These are the experiences I had with SHP.

When I signed up at SHP I was not a bicyclist. Lord, I didn’t even own a bike. Truth be told, even after the journey I still won’t be winning any medals in the Tour de France, but the fact is that it was only partly about the cycling. Yes, we went to beautiful places. Yes, I got in great shape because of it. And yes, we biked A LOT and saw things we never would have been able to had we been in a car. But what I really got out of that trip was some of the best friends I’ll ever have.

Why should you go? Because there are beautiful places out there you didn’t even know existed. Because boring people don’t go on bike trips. And because there’s no good TV on in the summer anyway.”
