Flowers, islands, good food, and classical ruins
MODERATE BIKING      14 DAYS
Trip #GR

Greece in the spring! Flowers, warm days, cool evenings, few tourists! Small, family-run inns and tavernas (no camping) are your accommodations on this trip. After a few days in Athens to see the famous sights, we ferry to Crete, where Heraklion’s archaeological and natural history museums are the best introduction to its ancient civilization. You will visit the Palace of Knossos, then cycle along the northern coast. Intriguing caves dot the route, as well as vineyards and olive groves, with opportunities to hike or swim. You might explore an ancient ruin, a tiny church or a deserted Venetian fortress. You will ferry to Santorini, where sunset is an event, best seen from dinner at a rooftop restaurant. Swimming from red- or black-sand beaches, touring the volcano on the island of Nea Kameni, amazing tiny shops, and sparkling white buildings against the brilliant blue sky fill your time on Santorini. You will hop on the ferry again, to Paros, a less-traveled island with all the charm you can imagine. Discover “your own” classical ruin or snorkel in the shallow bay. Dine at a seaside café draped with bougainvillea (and maybe an octopus!) and browse the narrow alleyways or the Frankish fort on the ocean front. Can you find all 100 doors in the Ekatontapyliani Church? History surrounds you in Greece, the food is mouth-watering (try Paros’ corn on the cob – fantastic!), and people are friendly and welcoming, especially in the beautiful month of May!
