In addition, there are dozens of castles, from fortresses to fairy tales, so there will be plenty
of opportunities for sightseeing. The route occasionally takes you away from the water, for
ventures into the countryside or along the top of the dike, staying at hostels or a gasthaus.
Tiny villages with steep red-tiled roofs and half-timbered houses are great places to stop at
the local boulangerie or pastry shop. Strasbourg’s mighty cathedral soars over the skyline
but is cool and mysterious inside. The 55 mile Rhine Gorge between Mainz and Koblenz is
one of Europe’s most beautiful cycling routes, with castles even built in the river! Germany is
a leader in promoting cycling as the best way to experience their beautiful countryside, so
enjoy! The trip closes in Bonn, home of Beethoven and the Bonn Summer Festival..
