Because personality and judgment are critical to the success of a trip, leaders are required to complete a five-day training course in Massachusetts prior to being assigned to a trip, with limited exceptions. Leaders also receive additional, trip-specific training during a four- to five-day orientation period immediately before departure and are required to return to SHP for three days following their trip to maintain close communication and continuity with the organization. Our leaders are not intended to function as traditional tour guides; instead, they are supported by extensive, time-tested SHP notes and area guides for the regions in which they travel.
